A holiday location

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Now that it is summer, many people around the world will be on holiday.

But a new trend amongst holidaymakers is for them to take their holidays at home and not travel.

Of course not travelling for your holidays is cheaper than travelling, but money is not the only reason behind this new trend.

Sophie Haworth, the director of The School of Life, an educational organisation, says that a holiday is not just going away or travelling but it is also a state of mind.

She says that by staying at home people can relax themselves and open their minds.

A new word has even been made up for this kind of holiday; a stay-cation!

It comes from the words stay and vacation (the American word for holiday).
Lucy Mangan, a UK journalist UK says that sometimes going away for your holiday might not give you peace of mind.

This is because being away from home and worrying about things you left behind will simply negate the benefit of the holiday.

Now the UK government is trying to encourage people to visit different parts of the UK instead of travelling abroad for their holidays.

This would mean that you are travelling for your holiday; just not to another country!

What do you think about spending your holiday at home? Would you rather go abroad for your holiday or visit another part of your country? Write to us in English!
هل تفضل قضاء عطلتك في بلدك أو خارجه؟ اكتب لنا بالإنجليزية!

l think about spending your holiday at home.

Fatimah, Riyadh

I'd prefer to stay at home on holiday because I'm studying at university and the holiday time is too short about 2 weeks maybe so i'd rather staycation

Hana, Gaza

I never go out for cations, I just stay at home, read magazin or some books & watch cabels, because wherever i go I found nothing warm like my sweet home!

Mubarak Ramadan, Sudan

in the holiday i spend my time at home beacause iam penniless, but i hope oneday to spend it out of my home the place that i wish to go its, london and usa

Huda, Viborg

It is better to stay at your country...most people who came from outside catch swine flu...so the best choice as i guess stay even at your home...

Fatima Saif, UAE

in my opinion the aim of the holiday is getting rid of the chore, and of the everyday scenes, so staying at home or travelling to another part of the same country doesn't fulfill that , while on the other hand travelling abroad is the only exit from the tiring routine and that by seeing new places , new poeple, while staying at home or at the same country generally, will increase your ennui , though you might have a physical relief , but your mental status will get exacerbated .
