هل قيم حقوق الانسان عالمية أم غربية؟

Ka Hsaw Ka, Burmese human rights activist

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today John and Louay talk about a significant human rights awards ceremony that has just taken place in Asia.

The award is called The Ramon Magsaysay Award, and it is presented in a region where some governments are hostile to the concept of human rights.

This year's award was given to a human rights activist called Ka Hsaw Wa from Burma.

Ka Hsaw Wa began his work as a human rights activist over 20 years ago in Burma when he was tortured as a student.

Since then, he has been doing his best to expose human rights abuses in Burma.

He also set up a non-governmental organisation (NGO) with his wife which secures compensation for displaced people.

After he received the award, Ka Hsaw Wa said that he wants to work on educating young people about non-violent social change.

Non-violent social change is a peaceful way of trying to change the society you live in for the better.

There were other people who also given awards during the ceremony; one recipient was given an award for developing HIV treatment drugs, and another for environmental campaigns.

Some people feel that human rights are not universal rights but are a western concept and that is why this award is significant, as it is Asian and not Western.

Do you think human rights are universal values and why? Write to us in English!

Human rights is something every singel human has to have it. Human rights definetly is not a universal values, because Gulf Countries (Islamic countries) as example . Gulf Countries absolutely does not even believe in human rights . In addition , i am an Arabic person and a Muslim too. Human rights maybe anywhere but in Gulf countries . About your main question , that is why in my opinion, human rights are Western values.
Badir, Quebec, Canada

I am deeply and strongly believe that the value of human rights are universal .but not only human being , even the rights of animal are universal.
Omar Mohamed Omar, Columbus, Ohio

I support human rights and I think that the concept of a global and not a Western concept This means that all human rights, justice, equality and self-esteem free of racism, injustice and this is the organism seeks Since time immemorial, and it is a dialogue of religions, and mutual respect for each other and then the elimination of racism and intolerance on the tribal violence.
Who among us does not hope this happens!
Therefore, this is not an isolated case or a Western concept.
In essence, the Justice and Equality is a balance of tensions to be equal to the pans in it.
With regard to the opinion that human rights is a Western concept, it is clear that it is likely that one of his stake on the other, there is in it.
