An Oxfam shop

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

The English charity Oxfam is one of the best-known charities in the UK.

It works in many countries around the world to help people who live in poverty and terrible conditions.

One source of funding for Oxfam's activities is a very large chain of charity shops up and down the UK.

These shops are staffed by volunteers and the products being sold are donated by members of the public.

A lot of people like to go to Oxfam shops because they have many good second-hand books.

Because so many people like to buy their second-hand books from Oxfam charity shops, the owners of independent second-hand book shops are not very happy.

They feel that Oxfam has unfair advantages over them.

They say that because Oxfam does not have to pay its staff any money or buy books to sell in its shops, it is difficult for them to compete with Oxfam.

Independent book shops have to employ staff and buy books to sell in their shops.

One second hand shop in the UK town of Salisbury has just closed saying it was because it could not compete with Oxfam.

But Oxfam say that they are not the reason for this; a spokeswoman told the BBC that there were many reasons such as the current economic climate and that many people now buy their books online.

I disagreed with Abdu. Because the charity works for people and helps them.If they can't help the charity thay should not be against the Oxfam.
Hassan Hureshi, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Yes, I think it is not fair for the ordinary Second hand shop; the ordinary second hand shop can not compete with the English charity Oxfam in selling second-hand books. The cost of running their business is much more than the charity one.
Nader, Jordan
