Oliver Hicks and his rowing boat

Today in BBC Xtra English Reda and John talk about a very special boat trip.

A young man called Oliver Hicks is in the early stages of a rowing challenge around the world.

The trip is estimated to take between 18 and 22 months. That is nearly 2 years alone on board a rowing boat!

But why would someone want to do that? Well, Oliver’s reason is a very special one.

As well as it being a challenge, he is doing it to raise money for a charity.

He has had a long association with a UK Children’s charity called ‘Hopes and Homes for Children’.

The charity aims to find homes for homeless children around the world.

Oliver is said to be a remarkable young man who is passionately struck by the work of the charity.

To cope with his long journey around the world, Oliver has a very well equipped boat with the internet and other tools of communication.

He has a daily video conference with one of his main sponsors and also writes a blog on his website.

Oliver is very determined, and one of the big drivers for him is that he will be raising money for the charity.
