الترغيب أفضل من الترهيب

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today Val and Liliane talk about the carrot and stick policy.

A group of researchers has discovered that people are more likely to contribute to society and do their fair share if they were given incentives.

If they are threatened with punishments, then less people want to do their fair share.

The researchers made people play a game called "The Public Goods Game" to see how people react to choices concerning their own interest and public interest.

The game is played by seeing how much people are willing to take from public goods for themselves, and how much they are willing to give to others.

If everyone who played the game just thought of their own personal interest, then everyone loses.

But if people also thought of the public interest, then everyone would win.

The researchers used a carrot and stick policy to see how people would react.

Carrot and Stick is an idiom that refers to giving someone a reward or incentive if they do something good (the carrot) or punishing them if they do something bad (using the stick).

People who played the game thought of the public interest when given an incentive but when threatened with a punishment they began to think of their own personal interests.

What do you think is more useful and effective in society; the carrot or the stick? Why? Write to us in English!

you can't use the two policy at the same situation but the carrot and stick can be used if you are in aweak condition not astrong condition as it used practically vice versa because the stronger one who can force his policy but if you use the carrot(INCENTIVES) only whenever you are strong you will be a modern mangement leader and every one canexecute your policy satisfactorily

First of all i didn't know that the say "carrot or stick" is related to donkey this is not good to assimilate reasonable humans with beasts.
Then about which better incentives or punishments I think it depends, because there are some people don't content with motives and keep doing the wrong thing "the stick here is better" however to ensure peoples good behavior the ruler must be 110 % fair, honest and sincere.

I would say the carrot is better. Because if you always use a force it will not work because the human being is always peasful and he likes to be treated in good way.So inorder to pass cetain policy through the community you have to have long run policy, which means that you have to listen carefully to whom you talk to and talk less.in imossing an idea to them? if they reject it and tell you that thiers is better than what you tell them! agree to their idea but tell them to try yours also

I think the carrot and stick policy is a widen phenomena that we should concider deeply in order to manage our life to be better. For instance,a lot of people may trust the stick way but on the other hand, others do not and according to this point there is a huge gap in such comprehension and how they work to get the most benefits of public interests or essential life effects. In addtion to above mentioned. Needless to say that the type of govern policy in Arab world say the opposite of carrot.

No doubt that the society needs the both way (carrot and stick), i mean some times people would never think about others unless they feel afraid which is comming by threaten & punishment. In the other side alot of people needs incentives to feel that there is something good waiting for them & they are doing good things in there life.
Mutwakil, Sudan

Some people positivly responde to carrot policy, but it seems that the majority of arab people needs the stick, and a hard and big stick
Abed-latif, Tubas, Palestine

Carrot is more positive policy dealing humanity where it gives people more encouragement to contribute than stick. normally when you give people room to think, chose and to act it explode their power and raise up their sprit to the sky.
Social work needs to have people working with their own motivation to get the expected results but if people feels it is obligation or a stick is hidden some where they would never act in honest way and will try hard to escape and avoid the responsibility
