انقسام عالمي حول تدريس نظرية داروين في المدارس

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today Rob and Reda talk about Darwin's controversial theory of evolution.

This year was the 200th anniversary of Darwin's theory of evolution which has divided opinion across the world.

Whilst many people still believe in creationism and that God had created humans and animals as they are, the theory of evolution also has many supporters who use science-based reasoning to convince others of their beliefs.

To find out how many people knew about the theory of evolution and if it should be taught to children in schools, the British Council carried out a survey of over 11'000 people in ten countries.

The survey discovered that to this day, people's attitudes towards the theory of evolution differ greatly.

For example almost 30% of the people asked in Egypt said that they would not want evolution to be taught in schools whilst over 40% of the people asked in Spain said that they wanted it to be taught exclusively and did not want creationism to be taught alongside it.

Dr Fern Elsdon-Baker from the British Council said that she believes the polarisation of opinion is because of the way the theory has been presented.

She said that some people see the debate over evolution as science versus religion.

However Dr Elsdon-Baker also said that there is a significant number of people who see no contradiction between religion and evolution and believe that God created life but evolution was a natural selection process.

One man told the BBC that he believes in God and also believes in evolution.

But this still does not solve the question of teaching children about evolution in school and for a lot of people, teaching children evolution or creationism is a very controversial thing to do.

Of course I do believe in teaching theory of evolution to children regardless of their attitudes and beliefs, I think in case they believe in creationism, that does not make any sence in depriving them from knowing about other points of view. Furthermore, I also belive in teaching creationism to those who believe in evolution.

I also believe that somebody can believe in both creationism and evolution. This is not the issue. But what is rationally unacceptable is what Darwin suggests about the existence, and the way he tried to prove his theory! He said if you put some bacteria in a glass of water, forges will leap out of the glass of water after 4 million years! This means we have to accept what Darwin said for 4 millions years without any scientific proof which is damaging to logic and also science principles.

Moses was the author of creationism. At least tradition is teaching that he wrote genisis. He was also a man of his time and had to teach a people which had just been liberated. Funny that he also mentioned that light was created before God created the sun. Our Holy Book doesn't oppose evolution but actually supports it.

I do not believe in evolution theory, I believe that Allah create the man as a man from the beginning, and I think it is not acceptable at all to teach this theory specially in Muslims countries and societies.

I believe on that the God create the whole world and created from every thing male and female and the creatures the resemble the human are only signals from the God to show us his power the god created you and you have your mind that differ human from animals and simply there are monkeys that look like you but can't reach what you reached Nagy Ahmed, Cairo, Egypt
