ضبط أكبر كمية من السجائر المهربة في أوروبا

The cigarette haul

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today Doug and Louay talk about the largest haul of illegal cigarettes in Europe.

Police and customs officers caught a ship in the early hours of the day when it began unloading its illegal cargo.

Their operation began when the ship set sail from the Phillipines on September 15th 2009 to Ireland with 120 million cigarettes wrapped with animal feed.

They followed the ship to Ireland and as the crew began unloading the cargo, officers siezed the illegal goods.

Each bundle of cigarettes wrapped in animal feed weighed a ton and in total they had a value of 40 million euros.

Illegal cigarettes are worrying officials not just because of customs and excise purposes but also because of the harm they can cause to young people.

Because they are not sold in shops but out on the streets, young people who are not allowed to buy cigarettes can buy them from dealers, and at a cheap price too.

They usually end up in deprived areas as well where young children are able to buy them and start smoking at a younger age.

Whilst some adults who spoke to the BBC said that they like to buy these cheaper cigarettes because they can save money, none of them mentioned the effects that these cigarettes are having on the younger generations living around them.

Here in my country the kids do as that in little age.they buy cigarettes but no one ask or care to them. They just need the tax on goods and that is it important in that

Smoking from my opinion I think smoking seriously affect health no doubt about it to all man kind specially to children.
Here in sudan there is no any surveillance to segarates so any one can buy a segaretes even children they can do that easier
So most of childrens here are smoking specially high school student they are free.
I hope to find asolution to that serious problem or we will loose all our childrens.
Altayeb Abdella, Sudan

The age limit for smoking in my country is 18 years. Yes I agree with it because smoking when we are young doesn't harm us as much as when we are over the age of 50 years. I advice smokers to quit smoking while they in middle age. At this time which the risk for cigarettes to do them harm is high.
Nader, Amman, Jordan
