الدنمارك تسمح باستخدام الانترنت في اختبارات المدارس

A girl taking her exams

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

The Danish government has taken a bold step in its education system and will allow pupils at colleges access to the internet during their final school year exams.

Currently, 14 colleges in Denmark have announced that they will test this new approach, even though all of the country's schools have been invited to join the scheme by 2011.

Students will be allowed to enter any website and use the internet for the whole exam; but they will not be allowed to contact or communicate with anyone else.

This move might not come as a surprise to people living in Denmark, as their country is known to always embrace technology.

Currently students are allowed to use a computer to answer their exams.

However some people are worried that allowing students full access to the internet might result in cheating.

Sanne Yde Schmidt, the lady in charge of applying this new scheme at one of Denmark's colleges says that colleges must learn to trust pupils and rely on their integrity.

She told the BBC that the main precaution is trust and that the number of cheaters will be very low because of the consequences of cheating in college exams.

The Danish government is very keen that this scheme works and is applied in other colleges too.

Bertel Haarder, the Danish Minister for education says that "exams have to reflect life in the classroom - and life in the classroom has to reflect life in society. The internet is indispensable, including in the exam situation."

The main idea behind the new scheme is that students are tested on their ability to research and analyse information; not memorise numbers and statistics.

Even though there will probably be a number of cheats, the Danish government hopes that they will be a very small number and that the majority of pupils benefit from this new scheme.
