Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English. Today we’re discussing a new plan to run Road Trains
across Europe.
An EU funded research project is looking in to an idea that will allow cars, buses and lorries to travel together along motorways in groups or ‘platoons’.
A driver in a lead vehicle will control the braking and steering of the platoon through wireless sensors. This means other drivers in the group can relax, read a book or do some work. The project is called Sartre (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) and is aimed at commuters in cars who travel long distances to work every day but it will also look at ways to involve commercial vehicles. Tom Robinson, project co-ordinator at engineering firm Ricardo says the technology already exists and it is similar to that used in a sat nav. It is hoped that the idea will cut down on road accidents. It will also improve fuel efficiency, reducing emissions, which is better for the en
vironment.
Drivers do not have to travel to the same destination together as they will be able to signal to the lead vehicle if they want to leave the platoon and take control again. However they need to look at the safety issues and work out the practicalities of it.
