Children being moved to Australia

The Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has apologised to hundreds of thousands of people for abuse they experienced as children.

Mr Rudd said that he was "deeply sorry" for the pain caused to the children and their extended families.

During their childhood, these people were abused or neglected during their time in children's homes and orphanages in Australia between 1930 and 1970.

A lot of these children were forced to migrate to Australia and were told - wrongly - that their parents had died.

They were promised a better life in Australia but when they arrived there, many of them suffered years of cruel treatment including sexual, psychological and physical abuse.

Some of them were even as young as three years old when they were moved to Australia as part of a plan to provide Australia with "good white stock" to populate the country.

The plan took children that were abandoned by their families or taken from their families by the state to Australia, Canada and other countries around the world.

These children are referred to as child migrants.

During his speech, Kevin Rudd also said that his government would work to ensure that such a tragedy would never happen again.

"Let us resolve to do all in our power to never allow this to happen again."

He also referred to these people as the "remembered Australians", instead of the "forgotten Australians", a term which many use to describe these people.

A UK charity called the Child Migrants Trust has been campaigning for over 20 years for recognition of the problems that these child migrants had to endure.

Its founder, Margaret Humphreys, travelled to Australia to hear Mr Rudd's apology.

She said that this apology was a significant moment in the history of child migration and that this recognition is vital if people are to recover from their terrible experiences.

Even though the Australian government has apologised, the British government has still not issued an apology, and says it will do so in the new year.
