الذكرى المئوية لأشهر سباك بريطاني

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

This week is the 100th anniversary of Thomas Crapper, one of England's most famous plumbers.

Even though a lot of people think that he invented the toilet, Thomas Crapper actually did not invent the toilet.

The toilet was around before Thomas Crapper, but during his time, it was not seen as polite to talk about toilets.

Instead of staying quiet, Thomas Crapper promoted toilets and began improving them, patenting a number of different inventions for them.

He also received royal warrants from two Kings, King Edward VII and King George V for installing and maintaining their toilets.

There is also another link to Thomas Crapper and that is the slang English word for excrement: crap!

Whilst it sounds similar to Crapper, crap is actually an old English word that means rubbish.

So sometimes slang English words do have a historical meaning to them!

How important are toilets to you? Should you spend a lot of money making them look beautiful? Write to us in English! ما هي اهمية المراحيض بالنسبة لك؟ هل يجب انفاق الكثير من المال على تجميلها؟ اكتب لنا بالانجليزية
