اكتشاف جينات جديدة لها صلة بمرض التوحد

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today we are talking about a new genetic study into autism.

Researchers of Oxford University, in Britain, identified many new genes involved in the development of autism in the largest ever genetic study on the subject.

They say that the discovery could help with the diagnosis of autism and even the identification of drugs to combat symptoms.

These can vary. Someone with autism can have real difficulty communicating and socialising. Many people can lead relatively normal lives while others need support throughout their lives.

Researchers estimate that about 500,000 people in the UK have autism.

The new research, published in the journal Nature, involved nearly 1,000 children. BBC science correspondent Pallab Ghosh reported that it has been known for some time that autism has a strong genetic influence but until now just eight or nine genes have been confirmed as playing a role.

Now using a new technique, more genes were identified and researchers say they might eventually find that as many as 300 genes could be involved.

Some of the newly identified genes help to connect brain cells together, others send signals within brain cells.
The study should identify precisely which parts of the brain fail in autistic people and why the symptoms vary so much from person to person.

Oxford University's Professor Tony Monaco, who took part in the research, is hoping to develop a genetic test for autism.
"Families could expect that we might be able to offer in a very near future some further DNA analysis of all patients with autism in clinical practice", said Monaco.

"We will start to work with pharmaceutical companies (and) one hope is that some of the drugs they may have developed for other purposes could be used against targets that we discovered have a role in autism."

But Britain's National Autistic Society is cautious. It said that genetic testing and new drugs are a long way off given that the disorder is so complex.
