لغة المقاهي المعقدة!

Ordering coffee can be complicated

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today Alice and Mouna talk about a strange story that happened to a professor of English at a popular coffee shop.

Professor Lynne Rosenthal, a professor of English in New York went into a Starbucks to order coffee.

She says that she was thrown out of the shop because she refused to use the language they wanted her to use.

Professor Rosenthal says that she came to order a bagel and the staff insisted that she say: with butter or with cheese.

When she refused they told her to leave.

But that is not the only type of language used in coffee shops; these days there are so many options that many people can get very confused.

For example, you could order a coffee that is skinny, or a double tall semi latte!

Or if you ask for a large coffee, the people serving you might not understand you because they call large Venti - which is an Italian word.

Critics of this say that these are terms that many customers might not understand or feel comfortable using and companies should be more flexible.

But there are those who see this as a positive aspect of globalisation where customers can go into any shop around the world and use the same terms to order their favourite drink!

What do you think of some of the terms used in coffee shops? Are they too complicated? Write to us in English!
