مشروب وطني - لكن مكوناته أجنبية!

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today Yvonne and Reda talk about the importance of tea in British history.

Tea is seen as a typically British drink, with many considering it as the national drink.

But very little, if anything to do with tea production is actually British!

The tea plants usually come from India, China or Africa whilst the sugar many use to sweeten their tea is also imported from Carribean or African countries.

Tea became a widely drunk beverage in the UK during the UK's time as a colonial power.

Controlling the countries that produced tea, the UK would help itself to the tea produced within those countries.

Initially tea was a luxury product and shipped from China to be served in the homes of the wealthy, without any milk or sugar.

Towards 1830, it became a lot cheaper to make as it began to be produced in Africa and India as well and the price of tea came down greatly.

Now, approximately 165 million cups of tea are drunk every day in Britain!

That is a huge number and shows how important tea is in British culture and how important it is to the British economy.

salah, sudan

In fact, tea's popularity has dropped significantly in the Arab world..Young people away from tea and preferred drinks ready-made.
Personally, I prefer to drink tea .. because it has many benefits for the body.
and I would advise not to drink tea with milk tea because the deposited calcium and phosphorus present in the milk that eliminates their usefulness.
Thanks
