Hello! Welcome to BBC Xtra English. Today Alice joins presenter to talk about quite a complicated subject. The link between brain structure and our politicalbeliefs. Scientists have done a small study to show this connection.
People’s political beliefs can be very strong and difficult to change as if we are hardwired with them. In this study scientists at the University College London scanned the brains of two UK MPs plus 90 students to test a hypothesis – is there a significant difference in the brains of people who say they are right wing, and the people who are left wing?
Scientists found that different parts of the brain are more developed in people with liberal or conservative views.
The people in this experiment told the scientists whether they self-classified themselves in terms of their political beliefs – that is, whether they were right or left wing.
There were two areas of the brain which showed significant difference. In the programme we hear that scientists looked at the ‘grey matter’ where the
nerve cells might be different depending on people’s political views. They found that some were larger and some smaller depending on whether people described themselves to be conservative or more liberal. Professor Colin Blakemore of Oxford University explained that the ‘grey matter’ in our brains can change size and shape over time even by simply playing computer games for a few minutes each week! People also change in their political beliefs over time growing either more conservative or more liberal as they get older. Another study also found that a ‘liberal gene’made people seek out lifestyles and other people which were different to their own. People with this gene were more likely to have liberal political views.
