Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today Abdu and Reda talk about the power of social media tools.

After the collapse of the Tunisian government, a lot of commentators around the world began discussing the role of social media tools such as Twitter and whether or not it was responsible for this event.

Prior to the revolution and during it, it appeared that the number of 'tweets' from Tunisia was steadily increasing.

Some journalists who talked to the BBC said that they believe social media tools are able to hold leaders or companies to account but are not powerful enough to cause regime change.

The editor of Wired, a British technology magazine, David Rowan, told the BBC that he does not see the internet as a way of bringing down governments.

Rather, he sees it as a means for voices outside the mainstream to have a voice.

This is not the first time that a lot has been written about the power of social media; in 2009 during protests in Iran, people also looked at the role of social media tools and questioned if they were behind the mass demonstrations.

Jared Cohen, the director of Google Ideas and an advisor to the US state department believes that the internet has an important role to play in inspiring political change.

He said that the internet appeals to the 60% of the world's population under the age of 30 years and that the internet offers them the chance to have a stake in political change.

But Professor Viktor Mayer from the Oxford Internet Institute feels that the internet can only really organise and bring together people who are already motivated.

He said that the internet is not good at creating a mass movement.

It give you information, which give you knowledge and power to make action, I did not think it is the major cause to what happen in Tunisia, but sure it have a crucial role in it
