Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today Doug joins Louay to talk about a new lawinthe UK which aims to cutdownbriberyandcorruption:

It is called the Bribery Act – and it has strict guidelines for British companies about what is illegal.

It aims to make the UK a global leaderinthefightagainstbusinesscorruption businesscorruption. It was due to be put into law intolaw next week but has beenpostponed postponed ‘tilJuly2011becausethegovernmentwantstogivebusinessesmoretimetoprepare.

There are three main areas of activitysomeare <legal>, some <illegal>.

The first area, corporate hospitality is still acceptable under the new rules Other areas of concern are what is called facilitation payments.

This is when a company pays a bribe to ‘oil the wheels’ of a business, or, facilitate it. These of course are illegal already – but companies will be punished more severely if found giving facilitation payments.

In the programme we hear from Richard Fenning, the CEO of Control Risk, a company which advises on corruption. He says that bribery is a terrible virus which keeps poor countries impoverished.

The third area covered is about companies which employ agents and intermediaries to pay bribes on their behalf, so they are not technically responsible for breaking the law.

Doug explains that the UK has been under pressure to improve its rules on corruption, and that it needs to catch up with other mainstream countries dealing with this problem.

The new law being implemented will be tougher on corrupt practice but will not include rewards for whistleblowers who alert authorities about corrupt actions.

We hear again from Richard Fenning who says he is optimistic about the new laws and that he already thinks the world is a less corrupt place than twenty or thirty years ago.

How about where you live – has it got better or worse over the last generation?

Will laws like this help deter corruption or is bribery a way of life?
