Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today we talk about the release of some confidential documents by the Swedish Foreign Ministry.

The documents were cables from the Swedish ambassador Orjan Berner in Moscow to Sweden.

Ambassador Berner was in Moscow from 1989 to 1994 and he was with the Soviet Foreign Minister at the time Eduard Shevardnadze on the morning after the wall fell.

Even though the documents did not provide any great revelations, they help give us an idea of how Swedish diplomats and the Soviet leadership viewed events as the old regime collapsed.

The Swedish ambassador wrote in the cables that he felt the Russians failed to understand that the fall of the wall would lead swiftly to German reunification.

According to the Swedish Ambassador, Mr Shevardnadze also poured cold water on the idea of Soviet republics splitting away and described Georgian independence as unrealistic.

Ironically, Mr Shevardnadze later became the president of an independent Georgia in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
