ميثاق كورش لحقوق الانسان يعود الى إيران

Hello and welcome to BBC Xtra English!

Today we are talking about an exhibition that took place at the Iranian National Museum in Tehran.

The exhibition was of a cylindrical artefact that is two and a half thousand years old.

It is significant because some historians regard it as the first ever human rights charter.

By order of the Persian king Cyrus the Great, the charter was inscribed in 539 BC.

It describes how King Cyrus liberated the city of Babylon from cruelty and oppression.

In it he decreed that all people of Babylon should be allowed to practice their own religion and culture.

However what is written on the cylinder remains controversial. Some historians claim that Cyrus was not a good king but in fact oppressed the people of Babylonia.

Others disagree with this and say that Cyrus was a king who allowed freedom of expression amongst his subjects.

The charter is borrowed from the British Museum as part of an agreement between British and Iranian museums.

Neil MacGregor, the director of the British Museum said that it is very significant that the Islamic Republic of Iran chose this particular pre-Islamic artefact and that museums from the two countries managed to work together on the exhibition
even though there is no real political dialogue between the two countries.

He told the BBC that whilst the exhibition might not have addressed the issues of the relationship between the two countries, it did create a space in which difficult conversations about human rights can take place.
