Cod liver oil is one of the most used supplements in the UK

For those of us trying to start the New Year with a detox or health-kick, could taking vitamin and mineral supplements be what we need?

Last year people in UK spent £380 million on supplements and experts say the demand is growing.

The supplement market grew by two per cent last year. The most popular purchases were multivitamins, cod liver oil and vitamin C.

Xtra English asked people in London if they took any supplements. One man, Jay, told us;

"I take whey protein because I lack protein in my diet. I take wheatgrass just because it's a great anti-oxidant, every morning, fresh."

Another woman, Tess, said;

"I tend to take things for joints. Fish oil supplements. That's very good for joints apparently. Glucosamine I've bought and I've bought various things that supposed to be good for ladies".

But she also said she was "in two minds" about whether supplements work or not:

"I think they do work, but because I'm not consistent with taking them, I never see the full benefit".

While supplements can provide an extra health boost, Dr Jill Jenkins says that "really you should be getting your vitamins, your minerals from nutrition."

According to government guidelines, vitamin and mineral tablets can't beat a good old-fashioned, balanced diet.
