  • A Rolls-Royce homecoming, 105 years in the making

    One of the world’s oldest Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts completed a 1,800mi rally across the Alps, finishing at the company’s headquarters in Goodwood, West Sussex, England. The 1908 model, known as the Silver Dawn, was a competitor in the 2013 Centenary Alpine Trial, an untimed heritage rally in which 42 Silver Ghosts participated, commemorating an Alpine rally from the early 1900s.   • Bentley green-lights first production SUV

    Previewed in concept form at the 2012 Geneva motor show, the as-yet-unnamed Bentley SUV received the official go-ahead this week. With its bulbous, top-heavy proportions, the EXP 9F concept shown in Geneva was a polarising vehicle, but Bentley has defended the design, emphasising heritage cues such as the mesh grille and rounded headlamps. SUV sales have buoyed premium brands in the last decade, and Bentley is investing £800m to ready its factory base in Crewe, England, in anticipation of the SUV’s 2016 projected delivery target.   • Mercedes engines for Aston Martin

    In a joint statement, Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin announced their intention to form a technical partnership in which Mercedes’ AMG performance division would supply Aston with engines for its sports cars. In turn, Daimler, Mercedes’ parent, would receive a 5% stake in the boutique British automaker.   • Ford profits surge on strong US sales

    Ford Motor reported a second-quarter profit of $1.2bn, underpinned by robust sales in North America. The region led with $2.3bn in earnings, offsetting losses in western Europe, where consumer demand continued its prolonged retreat.   • Porsche tops JD Power owner survey

    Owners of new cars ranked Porsche vehicles the most enjoyable to own in JD Power’s latest satisfaction survey. The industry analysis and forecasting firm queried US owners 90 days after making new-car purchases, and asked them to gauge their satisfaction in various areas, such as performance, design, content and fuel economy, on a numerical scale.   • BMW i3 starts at $42,275 in US

    The compact EV, the lynchpin of BMW’s electrification strategy, will be priced from $42,275, inclusive of $925 destination charge, when it goes on sale in the US in spring 2014. Built around a carbon-fibre-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) “cell”, the i3 is available as a pure EV or with a range-extending two-cylinder gasoline engine aboard.
