Counting down Top Gear’s 41 most memorable moments

  • Forty, plus one for good measure

Top Gear has minted no shortage of memorable moments in its nearly 20-year broadcast run. Whether sliding a Ford Fiesta through a shopping centre or breaching 250mph in a Bugatti Veyron SuperSport, the presenters – and the programme – are at their best when imbuing car love with a touch of absurdity.

But there are those moments (41 of them, in fact) that transcend even the lofty standards of Top Gear. Hence, the BBC America premiere of Top Gear’s Top 41, hosted by Richard Hammond. The series begins on 14 October and continues across eight additional episodes, with the Hamster counting down to the top 10.

Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect.

  • Episode 2

Jeremy, Richard and James take part in a classic car rally in Spain, an Apache gunship takes on a Lotus Exige and a blimp is enlisted in a most curious race against an Italian raging bull.

  • Episode 4

Top Gear's Top 41 sees Jeremy race a car against a mountain climber, the toughest car in the world is put through some punishing tests and all three Top Gear hosts take part in a 24 hour endurance race.

  • Episode 6

The countdown juggernaut rolls on with Richard Hammond unearthing more Top Gear chestnuts including: a bit of car football, the presenters’ attempt to build their own motor-homes (above) and a US road trip that sees the boys caught up in an aerial dogfight – and Jeremy in a mortal clash with an ice cream cone.

  • Episode 7

If ever there was a Top Gear moment where the promises of the passenger automobile were realised, it was here, where Jeremy managed to shoe-horn his frame into the Peel P50. Encounters with irate motorists and befuddled BBC staff ensue.

  • Episode 8

Top Gear's top 41 comes to the all-important top 10 moments. Highlights include a rally car v bobsled showdown, a supercar road trip through Italy, the Top Gear hosts’ attempt at building their own space shuttle and an epic sea voyage in homemade amphibious cars.
