Real Live Test Drive

Nissan Leaf v New York

The Leaf, the linchpin of Nissan’s electric vehicle strategy, is making inroads in New York.

A pair of public DC fast-chargers – capable of replenishing 80% of the EV’s juice in roughly 30 minutes – has been online in Manhattan for a year. A taxi trial involving the hatchback is underway, and the base car’s price has dropped with the addition of the S trim level in 2013. For buyers in some US states with generous tax incentives, a Leaf S can be approached for under $20,000.

The Leaf is not for everyone, as charging infrastructure outside major metropolitan areas is still scarce, but in the ultra-wired confines of Gotham, the Leaf appears right at home – as our Real Live Test Drive subject finds out.
