In 2014, carmakers predict worldwide sales of compact crossovers – stout little vehicles that split the difference between hatchbacks and SUVs – to increase three-fold over their 2013 levels.

Which makes these vehicles, commonly called CUVs, critical pieces of a company’s global growth strategy. And for Buick, which has worked feverishly to attract a younger, more active customer, the Encore is that car. Here, a young family puts the four-door runabout to the test.
