Our die-hard obsession with luxury

Luxury has a grip on our imaginations… and our wallets.  Down the ages, humans have cheated, seduced and murdered for the finest foods, art and ornaments.

Dr Michael Scott draws back the veil on this global obsession by exploring the concept of luxury from ancient times to the present day. In this video from BBC archives, Dr Scott explores funerals, fish markets, hair, even the theatre to explain our fixation with owning luxurious goods.

In this piece, the first in a classic series filmed across Greece and the UK, Dr Scott reveals how the most curious and revealing luxuries are the ones you would least expect.
