Voice & Power

This story is part of a new series on BBC Capital called Voice & Power, which analyses the relationships between our voices and our incomes,  our careers and our power.

Give a firm handshake. Make eye contact. Remember people’s names. Our working lives have long been filled with behaviours that supposedly make you more successful, build more contacts or help you earn more money.

But what about the way we speak? Do our voices affect our income? Can we change our speaking patterns to be more successful? And in what ways are we unfairly biased against certain types of voices?
