This prestigious five-week long festival of music and drama is a major event in the classical music calendar. The Austrian town of Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, provides the beautiful setting, and this year the focus is on Verdi and Wagner, two composers who would have celebrated their 200th birthday in 2013. Since 2008 the organisers have also placed a strong emphasis on youth programmes.
The event was first established in 1920, and since the 1960s the organisers have also held a festival at Whitsun. A total of 220 concerts will be held at 14 different venues, and the event will come to a close with a Festival Ball.
