A leading conceptualist and art professor of his generation, Christopher Williams studied at the California Institute of the Arts in the mid to late 1970s under the first wave of West Coast conceptual artists. The title of the exhibition is taken from a line in a documentary by Jean-Luc Godard, in which an amateur filmmaker compares his day job as a factory worker to his hobby. In this context it refers to the function of photography in today’s consumer culture.
