The French artist JR has been compared to Banksy, although arguably he is more innovative, and he resists the ‘street art’ label. He works all around the globe, making the architecture and culture of a city the theme of his work, which often has a social or political subtext.
Describing himself as a ‘photograffeur’, he applies his large-scale, black-and-white photographs as monumental posters on buildings, walls and stairways worldwide, with astonishing results. His oversized projects have appeared in Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia. Extraordinary.
