New paintings by American artist George Condo are on display at Simon Lee Gallery in the artist’s first solo presentation in London since his Hayward show of 2011-2012. He first was noticed in the early 1980s for his ‘fake Old Master’ paintings, and his work – painting, drawing, sculpture and print − has been influenced by art history from the Renaissance to Pop art. This show focuses on portraiture with a twist – the characters depicted are completely from the artist’s imagination. Building his figures through fractured forms, Condo plays with our perceptions of identity and personality.
