On view to the public for the first time, Indian Civilization is a series of eight monumental triptychs that encapsulate the artist’s vision of Indian culture. The paintings’ subjects include city life and historical events, and weaved in is religious and symbolic iconography as well as memories from the artist’s own life. Each panel explores a different theme, including Three Dynasties and Traditional Indian Festivals.
MF Husain, who died in 2011, was one of the most acclaimed and eminent Indian artists of the past century, and is still much celebrated. He began his career painting cinema hoardings after attending art school in Bombay, and went on to develop his unique style influenced by Cubism.
