Cannes 2013: Day one on the red carpet

  • Dior in a downpour

In spite of the pouring rain, Carey Mulligan looked the picture of polished simplicity in Dior couture accessorised with Tiffany & Co. earrings (and a gentleman on hand to carry her umbrella). (Rex Features)

  • Strike a pose

It was no surprise that face of Burberry and model-du-jour, Cara Delevingne wore a plunging black lace number from the British fashion house, along with Chopard jewels. (AFP/Getty)

  • In the red

If there’s one thing that red carpet fashionistas should know, it’s that a red gown is a risky business, as Georgia May Jagger (in Roberto Cavalli) and Isla Fisher (in Oscar de la Renta) show. Although they looked stunning, they are both in danger of disappearing into the background. (Rex Features)

  • Classical look

Opting for shocking pink instead, Freida Pinto’s elegant Gucci number brought a touch of Grecian elegance to the Cannes party. (Rex Features)

  • Sky’s the limit

Jury member Nicole Kidman stuck with one designer all the way, pairing an embellished, strapless Christian Dior gown with coral Dior heels and a high backcombed hairstyle. (Rex Features)

  • All that glitters

Not to be outdone in the glamour stakes by older sister Beyoncé, Solange Knowles’ flowing Stéphane Rolland number appeared with a leotard undergarment, adding a risqué touch to an otherwise demure gown. (Rex Features)

  • The Green Fairy

Perhaps a nod to her country’s famous tipple, French actress and ‘mistress of ceremonies’, Audrey Tautou chose a gathered white ‘Absinthe’ dress by Yiqing Yin for her opening duties. (AFP)

  • Taking the plunge

Chinese actress Zhang Yuqi turned heads in a fabulous green Ulyana Sergeenko dress, teamed with a bejewelled statement clutch. (AFP/Getty)

  • Black and white magic

Rooney Mara struck a sober but striking note with a monochrome jumpsuit and heels for The Great Gatsby party held at the Quai Lauboeuf. (Samir Hussein/Getty Images)

  • Sing for your supper

Having both recorded songs for The Great Gatsby soundtrack, pop stars Lana Del Rey and Florence Welch teamed up on the red carpet, with Del Rey in gothic black and white while Welch was in shiny pink polka dots courtesy of Miu Miu. (Rex Features)
