Weaving Turkey’s past into new fashion

Istanbul is at the heart of Turkey's booming fashion scene. Nikki Bedi meets Asli Filinta, a young Turkish designer inspired by her country’s culture.

Asli studied economics at Bilkent University in Ankara, and launched her eponymous fashion label in 2008 in New York. Despite showing her work all over the world, she has chosen to base herself in Istanbul, a rising power on the global fashion map.

Her 2014 collection was inspired by Sinan, chief architect and civil engineer of the Ottoman Empire. Other works are inspired by stories from Rumi’s poetry, and by Ottoman cartographers.

It’s a singular vision – Asli is aiming to be a worldwide brand within 20 years. Nikki Bedi meets the designer with global ambitions and local influences.
