Male Antarctic fur seals may have only one chance to breed. They compete for the best territories with vicious battles, inflicting servere wounds on each other with their razor-sharp canines.

For some males these wounds, combined with the effort of maintaining a territory, prove to be fatal. But for the winners the rewards are great, mating with large harems of females guarantees their chance to continue their bloodline into the next generation.
