Whooper swans are one of the heavyweights of the bird world; with a wingspan of nearly 2.5m and weighing up to 11kg (24lbs), they are one of the largest flying birds in the world. They can make their migration of 1,000 km (620 miles) from Iceland to Caerlaverock in 12 hours, flying at an altitude of 8,000m and speeds of 55mph. And their ‘whooping’ call is one of the loudest of any bird.
