A newborn Scottish wildcat has set a new standard for cuteness.

Filmed emerging from its den for the first time since being born (see video above), the kitten is not only winsome and adorable, it is hugely appealing due to its rarity.

The first to be bred at the UK's Chester Zoo, it is a member of one of the most at-risk species in the world, according to conservationists.

Scottish wildcats are Britain’s rarest mammal with fewer than 100 estimated to remain in the wild.

The kitten is so young, its keepers do not yet know its sex.
