ER-2
Nasa's Dryden research facility in California has a long history in the development of advanced aircraft.
Over the years it has contributed to everything from supersonic flight to the Moon landings.
It is also home to a fleet of advanced aircraft – some of which are experimental and some of which are used to fly science missions.
It recently opened its doors to BBC Future's transport correspondent Jon Stewart, who got a tour of one of its hangars and its high-altitude ER-2 craft.
