Over a decade after the human genome was sequenced, what has this information delivered? Who better to answer the question than Craig Venter, pioneering geneticist and synthetic biologist.
Venter took time out from promoting one of his recent genome-related successes – a joint venture between his institute and the pharmaceutical company Novartis to create a new meningitis vaccine – to discuss the current and future challenges his field faces in trying to tackle looming public health threats.
As he reveals, we are only at the beginning of what could be possible. “The future of society,” says Venter, “is 100% dependent on scientific advances.”
