What is one degree?

Temperature matters, but what is it? And what is one degree? These may seem like simple questions, but the reality is anything but clear-cut.

Comedian Ben Miller returns to his roots as a physicist to try to answer the question. He follows in the footsteps of famous scientists like Gallileo, Celsius and Joule to find out the basic principles behind heat, how to measure it and why it’s important. His quest takes him to researchers working on the hottest and coldest temperatures in the universe. He also experiences some of the strangest effects of quantum physics – in this world, super-cooled liquids can pass through solid glass.

So, what is one degree? And what does it represent?
