1664: The Dutch colony of New Amsterdam is surrendered to the British. It is renamed New York five years later.

1855: British and French troops capture Sevastopol from the Russians, effectively ending the Crimean War.

1944: The first German V2 rocket lands on London. It hits Chiswick, killing three people.
