BBC Birmingham Public Space

With the help of the BBC Birmingham props department, the me and my movie website, some expert advice from local community filmmaker Rachel Gillies, and a lot of enthusiasm, eight children took part in BBC Birmingham’s first me and my movie workshop.

Doing a recce of the Mailbox

The participants worked together to make a 2 minute movie from scratch in a day. This may not sound too much of a challenge, but as the kids found out, there is a lot more to movie making than just lights, camera, action.

From drawing up a pitch to doing a recce, choosing camera angles and the wonderful world of post production, the group had their work cut out.

The resulting film, Movilionnaire, is a combination of all the kids’ ideas. Following a news broadcast format, it reports on the largest prize ever awarded on a TV gameshow.

Filmmaker Rachel Gillies was very impressed with the kids’ hard work: 

“It was no mean feat to plan, film and edit an entire short movie in a day, but the group really worked hard and achieved in a few short hours what many more experienced film makers take weeks or even months to do!

“Watch out, there is a new generation of filmmakers coming through!”

Filming BBC Brunch

The film has been entered for the exclusive CBBC me and my movie award, in association with BAFTA, as part of a UK wide competition, which has received entries from all over the country.

The award will be presented to one of four nominees at the BAFTA Children's Awards ceremony, to be held in London on November 30th.
