Nominations for the BBC Sports Unsung Hero 2008 have now closed.

Now in its sixth year, the award, supported by Robinsons, is given to a volunteer who has made a difference to their community through sport.

There will be winners in the following BBC areas:

Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, East, East Midlands, London, North East & Cumbria, North West, South, South East, South West, West, West Midlands, Yorkshire, East Yorkshire & Lincolnshire.

Bursaries of up to £2,500 are available to winners of each regional award to help them with their work in sport.

Sports star such as Olympians gymnast Louis Smith, Zac Purchase, Sarah Stevenson, Chris Hoy and Rebecca Adlington have devoted their time as regional ambassadors to promote the awards.

The Unsung Hero from each area will be announced at the region's own sports awards, with events taking place in November and early December.

They then go forward to the star-studded BBC Sports Personality of the Year programme on Sunday 14 December, where an overall winner will be named.
