Why isn't the game appearing in the pop-up window?
In order to play Death in Sakkara you will need to download a free Flash plug-in for your internet browser. (On most computers this is already installed as standard.) BBC WebWise has a step-by-step guide to take you through this process.
Why does the game ask for my email address?
Your email address is required so that we can email your secret code to you. The secret code is unique to you and enables you to save your progress through the game at the end of each chapter. By registering with your email, we will also be able to send you updates on the game - when a new chapter is released, and if there are any 'secrets' you have missed in completing the adventure.
The BBC will only use your personal details for the purpose of sending you your secret code for Death in Sakkara, and for updates specifically about the game. If you would like more information, please read the BBC's privacy policy.
There is a 'guest' option in the game which allows you to play without supplying your email address. However, we strongly advise that you register for the game so that you can save your progress.
How do I stop receiving emails about the game?
To unsubscribe from updates, simply click on the link at the end of any of the Death in Sakkara emails sent to you previously. Please note that if you have registered with the same email address more than once, you will have multiple secret codes associated with that email address. By unsubscribing, you will be removed from email updates for ALL of the secret codes associated with that email address. Once unsubscribed, you will not receive any further emails about Death in Sakkara. You will only begin to receive email updates again if you request a copy of your secret code to be re-sent to your email account.
Why isn't my 'Secret Code' working? It keeps telling me my code is invalid.
The 'Secret Code' is case sensitive, and will only use lower-case letters, please ensure that you haven't got caps-lock on or any upper-case letters in the code you are typing. Our best suggestion for inputting your code is to copy and paste it from the email sent to you at the beginning of the adventure.
To do this: highlight the code in your email, hold down 'CTRL+C' or 'Apple key+C' to copy the code, load up the game, then click your mouse into the 'Secret Code' entry field. Finally, hold down 'CTRL+V' or 'Apple key+V' to paste the code. The 'Secret Code' should appear exactly as it did in your email.
If you have done all of the above and you are still getting an 'invalid code' error after clicking the 'Submit' button, make sure you have no spaces around your code. To check this, click your cursor in front of the code, if there is a space, press delete so that the cursor is flashing right next to the final letter/number of your code.
Why is the game taking so long to download?
Due to the complex nature of the game there is a significant amount of information to download to ensure your experience is as uninterrupted as possible once you start the adventure. Although the game has been built with broadband users in mind, it has also been optimised to accommodate those with slower connection speeds. Whenever the game is loading up content you should see an on-screen notification. After a short period of time (usually a few seconds) the required content should be displayed.
Can I play the game offline (while disconnected from the internet)?
Unfortunately, no. Death in Sakkara requires you to be connected to the internet during play. However, your progress is saved automatically at the end of each chapter. It is then safe to disconnect from the internet until the next time you want to play. You will need to enter your secret code to resume from where you left off.
I'm stuck... help me!
That's technically not a question! If you're having difficulty with any of the puzzles in adventure, don't give up. In the first instance try checking back through the journal to see if you have missed any clues. Also, Charles will sometimes think of things in the game which may give you a hint about where the solution to a puzzle may be. None of the puzzles or games in Death in Sakkara are impossible, some are tough, but there is always a solution somewhere... your task is to find it!
If you are really at your wits end, why not have a look at the message board to see if anyone else is stuck. You can also post your own plea for help. There will always be someone there to point you in the right direction.
Why can't I play the next episode? I want to know what happens next!
During the initial launch of Death in Sakkara, we will be releasing episodes on a weekly basis (dates are listed next to each episode number on the game launch page). The episodes will be online between 12pm and 1pm GMT on the dates of release, unless a notice has been posted on the message board indicating otherwise.
Once all four episodes have been released you will be able to play the adventure from beginning to the end with no delay. As for 'what happens next', you'll have to wait and see...
I know the next episode has been released, but why can't I select it under 'The Adventure' menu?
In the first instance try clearing out your temporary internet files/internet cache [files saved on your PC, such as images, so that pages you re-visit load quicker]. This will ensure you are viewing the latest version of the launch page and game holding page.
To delete these temporary files in Internet Explorer click on: Tools > Internet Options ... > Select 'General' Tab at the top > then click the 'Delete Files' button. All internet browsers give you the option to delete these files, please consult your browsers help section to find out how. After you have done this, refresh the game launch page (default key is F5) and relaunch the game.
If this doesn't cure the problem please visit the message board and let us know.
Please note: You will not be able to select or play episodes unless you have completed all the episodes preceeding them. If you want to re-visit the game you have to have your progress saved under a 'Secret Code' in order to continue from where you left off. Once you have completed an episode you can re-play it as many times as you wish.
When I requested a reminder of my secret code I received more than one email. Why is this?
When you ask for a secret code reminder to be sent to your email account, the game will send all secret codes which have been registered under that email address. You will therefore receive more than one set of email notifications if you have registered more than once for the game using the same email address.
Why is the game running slowly on my computer?
The minimum computer specifications recommended by the Death in Sakkara developers is: CPU: 1GHz, 128MB RAM and at least a 32MB graphics card. If your computer has all these components you should be able to play the game with little to no slow-down. However, variations in computer specfications may vary the performance of the game.
The general rule of thumb is: the faster your computer processor, graphics card and internet connection, the faster the game will run (up to its desired speed). If you are experiencing technical difficulties playing the game which are not covered by this response please visit the Death in Sakkara message board and let us know.
