Why isn't the game appearing in the pop-up window?
In order to play CDX you will need to update to/download the latest version of the free Flash plug-in (version 8) for your internet browser. BBC WebWise has a step-by-step guide to take you through this process.
I live outside the UK. Why won't the game load?
We regret that we cannot offer CDX to non-UK users. Some non-domestic UK users may also experience problems accessing the service. For more information about this, please see the BBC's Broadband FAQ page.
I live INSIDE the UK. Why won't the game load?
In order to control access to BBC Broadband material the BBC obtains 'IP address ranges' from UK-based Internet Service Providers (ISPs). This has proved to be a considerable task for a number of reasons, but mainly due to the number of ISPs and the fact that they obtain new ranges on a regular basis. As a result, even if an ISP is listed as able to access BBC broadband - there is a chance that your particular IP address may not be listed in our database.
There are therefore a number of reasons why UK-based computers may have problems accessing BBC Broadband content:
- Your ISP has not registered with us
- Your ISP has registered with us and we are still processing their registration
- There is a technical problem with your IP Address
- You are using a web accelerator programme which sends information though proxies in the USA or Europe, this can block our video streams and we suggest turning these off when accessing UK content.
- Some proxies do not send the http x forward access which we need to ensure non-UK residents are not using proxies to access rights restricted material, if you're a network admin please enable http x forward.
If you are still experiencing problems, and you are using a UK-based computer, please contact the CDX Team.
Why is the game taking so long to download?
Due to the complex nature of the game there is a significant amount of information and video content to download to ensure your experience is as uninterrupted as possible once you start the game. You will need a broadband (high speed) internet connection in order to play CDX. Whenever the game is loading up content you should see an on-screen notification. After a short period of time the required content should be displayed. Users with a 256K connection or below will experience significant delays and may not be able to play CDX.
During peak times you may have to wait longer for the CDX video content to appear. Unfortunately, this is beyond our control and is a result of the game being played by a large number of users. If you experience persistent problems with the video streaming in the game, this may be because you are attempting to play the game through a firewall that is blocking access. Many corporate firewalls will block access to streamed media such as video. If this is the case, you should try playing the game from a different computer outside the firewall, such as your home computer.
It's important to be aware that the actual download speed made available to you by your service provider may vary considerably from the advertised speed, depending on network traffic conditions within the provider's service. For more information on the possible issues, please see the BBC Broadband FAQ page.
I have the Flash plug-in, so why can't I see the game?
In order to play CDX you will need to update to/download the latest version of the free Flash plug-in (version 8) for your internet browser. BBC WebWise has a step-by-step guide to take you through this process.
Why does the game ask for my email address?
Your email address is required so that we can email your secret code to you. The secret code is unique to you and enables you to save your progress through the game at the end of each chapter. By registering with your email, we will also be able to send you updates on the game, such as when a new chapter is released.
The BBC will only use your personal details for the purpose of sending you your secret code for CDX, and for updates specifically about the game. If you would like more information, please read the BBC's privacy policy.
There is a 'guest' option in the game which allows you to play without supplying your email address. However, we strongly advise that you register for the game so that you can save your progress.
How do I stop receiving emails about the game?
To unsubscribe from updates, simply click on the link at the end of any of the CDX emails sent to you previously. Please note that if you have registered with the same email address more than once, you will have multiple secret codes associated with that email address. By unsubscribing, you will be removed from email updates for ALL of the secret codes associated with that email address. Once unsubscribed, you will not receive any further emails about CDX. You will only begin to receive email updates again if you request a copy of your secret code to be re-sent to your email account.
Why isn't my secret code working? It keeps telling me my code is invalid.
The secret code is case sensitive, and will only use lower-case letters, please ensure that you haven't got 'caps-lock' on or any upper-case letters in the code you are typing. Our best suggestion for inputting your code is to copy and paste it from the email sent to you at the beginning of the adventure.
To do this: highlight the code in your email, hold down 'CTRL+C' or 'Apple key+C' to copy the code, load up the game, then click your mouse into the secret code entry field. Finally, hold down 'CTRL+V' or 'Apple key+V' to paste the code. The secret code should appear exactly as it did in your email.
If you have done all of the above and you are still getting an 'invalid code' error after clicking the 'Submit' button, make sure you have no spaces around your code. To check this, click your cursor in front of the code, if there is a space, press delete so that the cursor is flashing right next to the final letter/number of your code.
Can I play the game offline (while disconnected from the internet)?
Unfortunately, no. CDX requires you to be connected to the internet during play. However, your progress is saved automatically if you have asked for a secret code. You will need to enter this secret code when you start the game to resume from where you left off.
I'm stuck... help me!
If you're having difficulty with any of the games in CDX, don't give up. None of the games are impossible, some are tough, but there is always a solution.
If you are really at your wit's end, why not have a look at the message board to see if anyone else is stuck. You can also post your own plea for help. There will always be someone there to point you in the right direction.
Why can't I play the next episode? I want to know what happens next!
During the initial launch of CDX, we will be releasing episodes one at a time (launch dates will be announced for the next episodes on the message board and will all appear on the launch page). The episodes will be online between 12pm and 1pm GMT on the dates of release, unless a notice has been posted on the message board indicating otherwise.
Once all four episodes have been released you will be able to play the game from the beginning to the end with no delay.
When I requested a reminder of my secret code I received more than one email. Why is this?
When you ask for a secret code reminder to be sent to your email account, the game will send all secret codes which have been registered under that email address. You will therefore receive more than one set of email notifications if you have registered more than once for the game using the same email address.
Why is the game running slowly on my computer?
The minimum computer specifications recommended by the CDX developers is: CPU: 1GHz, 128MB RAM and at least a 32MB graphics card. If your computer has all these components you should be able to play the game with little to no slow-down. However, variations in computer specifications may vary the performance of the video/game.
The general rule of thumb is: the faster your computer processor and graphics card the faster the game will run (up to its desired speed). You will also need a broadband internet connection in order to play CDX.
If the technical difficulties you are experiencing are not covered by this response, please visit the CDX message board and let us know.
