What Treasure Tells Us

By JD Hill

Finds from prehistory reveal the sophisticated nature of ancient craftsmanship - but what do they tell us about the religious rituals and spiritual belief of those times? JD Hill takes a closer look at some key finds.

Hidden stories

What can Treasure tell us about the religions and rituals of British people over the last 4,000 years? At first glance, the famous gold and silver objects that have been discovered over the centuries appear to tell us more about the skills of our ancestors to work precious metal, and about the daily lives of the more powerful people of ancient times, than they tell us directly about their Gods, beliefs and rites.

'... more will be learned as more objects are found and recorded, identified and added to the archaeological record.'

And since ancient gold and silver appears to cast so little light on these important areas of people's lives, you might think that the far more common finds of coins, brooches and other everyday objects will tell us even les.

This is not the case, however, as despite not seeming to give away much at first, archaeological evidence of both the common and the uncommon kind does give quite a lot of information about the religious beliefs and rituals of ancient peoples - although you need some background knowledge to pick up the clues. And more will be learned as more objects are found and recorded, identified and added to the archaeological record.
