The picture shows replicas of Welsh warrior weapons. Norman Davies has described the conquest of Wales as one of the most 'decisive events in the history of the Isles'. Yet Edward's attempts to stamp his authority on Wales and create an English colony - by establishing settler towns, destroying native churches and eradicating Welsh culture - in many ways helped to strengthen Welsh unity and nurture a shared Welsh identity.
