Voices of D-Day

Listen to the voices of eight people who experienced D-Day first-hand, by clicking on the images below.

On 6 June 1944, tens of thousands of Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy to begin the long-awaited liberation of Europe - but the success of D-Day was far from assured. Up to 40,000 casualties were expected on the first day alone, but through a combination of meticulous planning, individual courage and good luck, the beachheads were gained for a quarter of that cost.

Experience one of the most momentous operations of World War Two through the words of British and American soldiers who led the assaults, a French Resistance fighter who spied from behind the lines and the German defender who celebrated his 18th birthday on D-Day.
