Police in Italy have arrested several people, including local government officials, on suspicion of corruption following the earthquake in the central city of L'Aquila five years ago.

They are accused of having accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from companies looking to win reconstruction projects.

The illegal deals are believed to have occurred just months after the earthquake devastated the area, killing more than 300 people.

A food company, Maruha Nichiro Holdings, announced last week that it was recalling products, including pizza and pancakes, made at a factory north of Tokyo, after some were found to contain high levels of malathion - an insecticide used in farming.
