Putin warns Ukraine about gas supply

President Putin has warned Ukraine it might have to pay for its imports of Russian gas in advance.

The Russian president said his state-owned supplier, Gazprom, had the right to invoke a clause in its contract and demand prepayment if Ukraine didn't clear its arrears - which he said amounted to $2.2 billion.

Mr Putin said that only negotiations with the European Union could defuse the row.

Ukraine's dependence on energy supplies from Russia remains a key bargaining point in deteriorating relations between the two countries.

Putin peringatkan Ukraina tentang pasokan gas
