The BBC is committed to creating and maintaining buildings that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. How do we do this? By minimising our energy consumption, by using more alternative energy sources, and by promoting waste reduction and recycling. A highlight of last year was a notable reduction in our carbon dioxide emissions, because over 95% of all electricity used by the BBC comes from ‘green power' sources such as hydroelectric power stations and wind farms.
Our latest building developments at White City and Broadcasting House in London have both been recognised as environmentally “excellent” by national award bodies. This standard covers not only building materials and energy supplies but also the wider community impact.
All our new building developments – such as White City, Pacific Quay and Salford Quays – are part of much larger regeneration projects, developed on ‘brownfield' sites and bringing new employment and activity to their localities. Such building developments will, as a matter of course, include green transport and landscaping policies, encouraging responsible attitudes towards the environment.
There are lots of BBC environment initiatives which involve all of us in our local community in thinking and acting greener. Take a look at the Breathing Places campaign – it's all about creating and caring for green places in your locality, wherever you live in the UK.
